First railway link between Thailand and Laos openedWith the opening of a rail link over the Mekong River it is now possible to travel from Thailand to Laos by train. For now two trains will run the 30-minute return trip each day, serving about 500 people daily.
This adds another 3.5km to the UN-backed Trans-Asian Railway which currently has almost 75,000km through 29 countries which is planned to be completed around 2020.
