First railway link between Thailand and Laos opened

With the opening of a rail link over the Mekong River it is now possible to travel from Thailand to Laos by train. For now two trains will run the 30-minute return trip each day, serving about 500 people daily.

This adds another 3.5km to the UN-backed Trans-Asian Railway which currently has almost 75,000km through 29 countries which is planned to be completed around 2020.
The track over the Friendship bridge was funded by the Thai government and marks the first international rail link for Laos which has no direct acces to the sea.
